Ryan Roberts signs Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox have signed a major league contract with free agent infielder Ryan Roberts from the Chicago Cubs to a one-year, $1 million contract, the team announced on their official website.

The veteran infielder previously opted out of his minor league deal with the Chicago Cubs at the end of spring training, where he played 18 games with the Cubs this year.

The Sox manager John Farrell said in a statement: “We felt like we needed to add another right-handed bat who was third-base capable, We’re in a little bit of a platoon situation at third base in the short run.

The 33-year-old Roberts is now with his fifth big Major League team, having played for Toronto Blue Jays (2006–2007), Texas Rangers (2008), Arizona Diamondbacks (2009–2012) and Tampa Bay Rays (2012–2013) before signing the Sox.
