Mitchell Johnson announces retirement from Big Bash League

Former Australian all-rounder Mitchell Johnson has announced his decision to retire from the Big Bash League.

The 36-year-old, however, will continue to play in T20 domestic tournaments across the globe.

The left-arm seamer featured for Perth Scorchers in the last two seasons and played a crucial role in the side winning the title in 2016-17.

The lanky bowler played a total 19 BBL games and claimed 20 wickets at an economy rate of 6.15.

“The intensity and length of the BBL is just too much for someone who will be 37 at the start of the summer,” Sam Halvorsen, Mitch’s manager, told The West Australian newspaper. “Mitch has put his name up for the Emirates tournament in Dubai, but that is half the length of the BBL.”

With this announcement, Johnson’s future in the Indian Premier League remains uncertain. As the mega-rich league also features 14 fixtures excluding the finals of the tournament.

Johnson was also part of the national side that won the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.
