Man Utd plot bold Rafael Leao swap move ahead of summer window

Manchester United are weighing up a bold player-plus-cash move for AC Milan winger Rafael Leao this summer, according to Caught Offside. With Champions League football secured after a two-year absence, United are hungry to strengthen — and Leao has emerged as a prime left-wing target.

The Deal on the Table

Leao’s contract contains a £152 million release clause, but Milan could sanction his departure for as little as £44 million in a part-exchange arrangement. United are reportedly ready to include one of Manuel Ugarte, Joshua Zirkzee, or Marcus Rashford as a makeweight — freeing up a key squad slot while funding the deal.

Why United Need Him

Matheus Cunha arrived last summer to bolster the left flank and has delivered a respectable 10 goals and 4 assists in 35 appearances. But that simply isn’t enough for a side with genuine silverware ambitions. Patrick Dorgu has plugged gaps as a makeshift option, yet lacks the elite dribbling and creativity that a specialist winger brings.

Leao ticks those boxes emphatically. In 2024/25, operating as a dedicated left winger, he racked up 12 goals and 13 assists — numbers that speak for themselves.

The Leao Question

His current Milan numbers look modest — just 13 goal contributions — but context matters. Allegri’s 3-5-2 has pushed him into a second striker role, stifling his natural game.

The real question? Would Leao accept sharing the left wing with Cunha under incoming boss Michael Carrick? At Milan, he starts week in, week out. That guarantee won’t exist at Old Trafford.
