Barcelona: Thomas Vermaelen ruled out of action for four months

Barcelona have confirmed that the Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen has been sidelined for four months after undergoing successful surgery on a hamstring injury, the Liga club announced on their Twitter handle.

The 29 year old centre-back, who joined Barca from Arsenal in a £15 million deal over the summer, has yet to make his competitive debut for the Catalan club due to fitness issues.

“Thomas Vermaelen successfully underwent surgery on Wednesday on the semitendinosus muscle in his right hamstring,” a statement read on the club’s official website. “The recovery period is estimated at approximately four months.”

Vermaelen contract at Camp Nou runs until June 30, 2019, who is now expected to be out of action until March 2015.
